It's thirty years later。 That is an up hill climb that is brushed aside for convenience。 While the book does come back around to connect the activities of the early chapters to what the rest of the book was about, it really isn't terribly interesting, and that foreshadowed a number of things in this work。 There were times I had no interest in reading chapters because they just had so little to keep your attention。 Worse were the portions that provided no new information or character evolutions。 And then suddenly you had a few chapters that really moved with character and plot working well together。 The parts that lacked enjoyment were really going through the motions rather than coming up with a good way to communicate necessary but not as interesting plot points。 I get it, it happens, it can be fine。 But there are entire characters whose portions of the book are like this and that is a big problem。As far as the new antagonists go, they work well enough to be believable。 The Medina governor is someone learning the wrong lessons but his character makes sense given all the other things going on。 The people of Laconia that come through the gates to attack and take control is very much in line with imperial behaviors and beliefs about why and how a people should be conquered, or as they put it, brought into the fold。There's potential heading into the next book in the series, and there is real threat here which didn't always feel like that in a few of the previous entries。 If they clean up some of the smaller characters whose experience is to communicate plot points more than anything else this could come to a good couple of concluding books。Over all, two and a half out of five stars。 You got this far already, you should be able to make it through here well enough。 。。。more

The first book I read after finishing the TV series, and it lived up to my expectations。

Way better than the last book。 Why? People grew and changed a lot。 Years have passed。 Retirement is talked about。 And hinted at dangers rear up to the front。 Now I have to wait my turn at the library。 I gobbled this one up quick and wished I had put it down after the 5th chapter to reserved the next book。 18 week wait!!!!

Possibly the best in the whole series, I absolutely devoured this book in no time。 All the characters doing all the good stuff, excellent descriptions of huge spaceship battles, skirmishes, hand to hand fights and even calm moments sharing meals。 Drummer is developed as a character, you really hate Singh all the way through, and Bobbie is just。。。Bobbie。 Love it。

To an extent the theory I was forming about this series in the last book played out in this one。 I also listened to a podcast about Persepolis and Xerxes march on the Greeks with overwhelming force and intelligence, only to fail at the final hurdle。 So in some way there are some allusions to classical history, the titles giving this lead。 Is Persia an appropriate parallel to this plot? In a fun way I think there is something to compare, but it’s certainly not just a futuristic retelling。 I was glad to see the re-emergence of the protomolecule, bringing back the strangeness which good scifi should always have somewhere。 Cleverly, it continues to be a technology which doesn’t appear to be good or evil in its own right, only becoming as such in the hands of those who possess it。 I think。 And is this a further parallel to the classics? I don’t think this is a classical thing, but a facet of history in general and I wonder whether the strangeness of atomic energy, or of gunpowder, or of the metallic alloys which facilitated premodern times were as revolutionary as alien technology like the protomolecule is made out as? At it’s heart, the possibility that alien encounters, whether artifacts or otherwise, is a question most scifi is trying to contemplate。 But whether alien or not, human nature interacting with technology is bound to cause more conundrums。 。。。more

Great revisit to the expanse universe。 I enjoyed it overall but it did serve as a setup for the next book。 A lot of exposition with some action peppered in。

NO SPOILERSI came off this right after finishing watching the show, without reading the previous books, and other than one major difference that I won't spoil, it was a very smooth transition。 The writing is smooth and easy to read, and the show must have followed the important parts really close because each of the characters here were exactly the ones I saw on screen。 If you want to pick up where the show left off and see the rest of the story, there's absolutely no issue。As for the book itsel NO SPOILERSI came off this right after finishing watching the show, without reading the previous books, and other than one major difference that I won't spoil, it was a very smooth transition。 The writing is smooth and easy to read, and the show must have followed the important parts really close because each of the characters here were exactly the ones I saw on screen。 If you want to pick up where the show left off and see the rest of the story, there's absolutely no issue。As for the book itself, it was fun! A bit long, but though the book felt like there was too much filler, I don't really see how you'd cut anything out。 Lots of action and dispair and politics。 And of course, our favorite people a bit older but still a family。 It was a wild and thoroughly enjoyable ride。 。。。more

The series continued and much like modern shows, features a unique way to change the setting just slightly and find a new way to keep the story fresh again。 One good thing is that by doing this the characters were allowed to not have the entirety of the 'lives' that we see in print become overwhelmed by the issues of our main story。 It feels like the best way a sequel brings in older characters for nostalgia, but we know that they are there for the right reasons。We know that our crew of heroes h The series continued and much like modern shows, features a unique way to change the setting just slightly and find a new way to keep the story fresh again。 One good thing is that by doing this the characters were allowed to not have the entirety of the 'lives' that we see in print become overwhelmed by the issues of our main story。 It feels like the best way a sequel brings in older characters for nostalgia, but we know that they are there for the right reasons。We know that our crew of heroes has the ability to make things happen and when things don't break their way its mostly because they are choosing to do the right thing and be the good guys。 Knowing this was a set up for the ending, thibgs kept pace even though all of these novels are really long。 。。。more

More action than in the previous books combined!Wow。 Just wow。 And freaking finally! From start to finish this was a wild ride - unsettling, gripping, with lots and lots of stuff going on。 I haven't been this invested in an Expanse book since Leviathan Wakes。Persepolis Rising finally leaves behind the political tiptoeing and vague intrigues of the previous Expanse books。 Instead, the action kicks in at about 30% and doesn't ebb off until the end with each POV keeping me engaged and on edge。It's More action than in the previous books combined!Wow。 Just wow。 And freaking finally! This book was great。 It has two storylines, an A and a B story and one is quite local whereas the other is more grand in scope and involves all the systems。 The local story reads like an Ocean's Eleven movie where as the grander story is filled with intrigue and more politics。 I really liked the 'bigger' story and found it the best the Expanse has been however the smaller more local storyline was hard to get through。 This book was great。 It has two storylines, an A and a B story and one is quite local whereas the other is more grand in scope and involves all the systems。 The local story reads like an Ocean's Eleven movie where as the grander story is filled with intrigue and more politics。 I really liked the 'bigger' story and found it the best the Expanse has been however the smaller more local storyline was hard to get through。 。。。more

If I broke down my thoughts on this book into one word, it would be "well-balanced"。 Not super great by any means, but shows a clear path to tell the best story it can within its universe。 Its faults are more missed opportunities than anything else, and what it does well it makes sure to do so in abundance。 As the first book in the final Expanse arc, it behaves much like a good breakfast。 Giving everything you need to start your day on the right track。PR is better-paced than most other books in If I broke down my thoughts on this book into one word, it would be "well-balanced"。 Not super great by any means, but shows a clear path to tell the best story it can within its universe。 Its faults are more missed opportunities than anything else, and what it does well it makes sure to do so in abundance。 As the first book in the final Expanse arc, it behaves much like a good breakfast。 Giving everything you need to start your day on the right track。PR is better-paced than most other books in the series。 most of the books had a problem with repeating patterns。 Build up to calamity, calamity, deal with the fallout。 This book isn't much better than in that regard, but it paces it much better。 It also has multiple ebbs and flows rather than one massive event to build a story around。 If anything, it feels much like the first book but has learned how to write it better over the course of multiple years。 There's a feeling of getting back to basics without becoming basic in the process。My only major problem with it is the lack of usage in the time skip。 The advantage of a time skip is that you can dislocate characters and events to create the feeling of starting anew。 It can be disorienting, but exciting at the same time。 The problem here is that most of the characters are pretty much the same as they were at the end of the sixth book。 Older to be sure, but different in any real way。 There's nothing bad about it, just feels like something more could have been done。Stupid example: The introduction of Goten towards the beginning of the Buu Saga。 Years had gone by and the audience was hit with several things they expected。 Then, they were hit with a development they weren't。The political dynamics are strong and the writing is smart。 I would even say the prose and characters are better than in most of the previous novels。 Seemingly knowing this is the final arc and the authors put their best foot forward。 All in all, I rather enjoyed this volume of the Expanse series。 I had to chew on a lot of Teflon to get to this point, but I'm glad that I'm here to enjoy it。 。。。more
